Sydney (Australia), Apr 19 (EFE).- The Australian organization Pride Cup, which defends LGTBI+ rights, condemned this Wednesday the veto of the transgender basketball player Lexi Rodgers to register in a women’s semi-professional league, considering that it sends a “worrying” message about inclusion in sport.

The ban “tells trans people that they shouldn’t excel in sports, (or) they’ll be ostracized if they’re too good,” Pride Cup executive director Hayley Conway said in a statement.

The criticism comes after the Australian basketball federation on Tuesday ruled out the registration of Lexi Rodgers in the Kilsyth Cobras team, from the southern conference of the NBL1 tournament.

The federation argued the decision after the analysis of a panel of experts based on various factors to make its decision, such as fairness and the competitive nature of the sport, without providing further details.

“The policy and process on which this decision is based should be transparent,” Conway said, insisting that there are still “no definitive studies showing an advantage for trans athletes in elite (sports).”

The case of Lexi Rogers has highlighted the debate on the inclusion of transgender people in women’s sports in Australia, a country in which -according to Pride Cup- only six percent of the members of the LGTBI+ collective participate in sports teams against the fear of being discriminated.

In 2019, Sports Australia, which regulates sports in the oceanic country, published a report together with the Australian Human Rights Commission that included a series of guidelines on the inclusion of athletes without discriminating against their sex or gender differences. EFE
