Manchester City convincingly won the Premier League top match against Liverpool on Saturday. The team of manager Josep Guardiola was 4-1 too strong in its own Etihad Stadium. Leaders Arsenal booked the seventh league victory in a row against Leeds United: 4-1.
Liverpool took the lead early in the entertaining game thanks to Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian rounded off beautifully after an outbreak and thus scored his twelfth league goal.
City’s reply followed quickly. After a nice attack, Jack Grealish passed the ball and Julian Álvarez was in the right place: 1-1. In the continuation of the first half, in which tempers sometimes rose nicely, City had the upper hand.
After the break, Liverpool was outclassed at times. The 2-1 fell quickly and looked very much like the equalizer. This time Riyad Mahrez gave the perfect lead to Kevin De Bruyne, who had been lost sight of by Virgil van Dijk. Not much later, Ilkay Gündogan extended the score by shooting from close range.
Liverpool no longer believed in it and had to swallow the fourth goal twenty minutes before the end. After another smooth City attack, Grealish rounded diagonally. In the final phase, City could often do what it wanted, but no more goals were scored.
At Liverpool there were basic places for Van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, who could not distinguish himself offensively. Nathan Aké was one of City’s first eleven. Erling Haaland was left out of the City selection at the last minute due to a groin injury. He celebrated his team’s goals exuberantly in the stands.

Arsenal registers seventh league victory in a row
The backlog of number two Manchester City on Arsenal is eight points, although the Londoners have played a game more. ‘The Gunners’ won 4-1 against Leeds United later in the day at their own Emirates Stadium.
Gabriel Jesus opened the score for Arsenal ten minutes before the break from a penalty. Shortly after the break, Ben White doubled the lead by tapping in a cross from Gabriel Martinelli.
Moments later, Jesus also made it 3-0 from a nice attack. Former Ajax player Rasmus Kristensen did something back for Leeds fifteen minutes before the end, with Crysencio Summerville and Pascal Struijk having a starting place. Granit Xhaka made it 4-1 in the final phase by heading in from a Martin Ødegaard cross.
A dismal season threatens for Liverpool. The team of manager Jürgen Klopp is seventh in the Premier League and has to fear that it will miss out on Champions League football. ‘The Reds’ have already played out in all tournaments. Brentford took over sixth place from Liverpool with a 3-3 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion.
Chelsea already suffered the tenth league defeat of the season at Stamford Bridge. The Londoners lost 0-2 to Aston Villa through goals from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn (penalty). Chelsea drops to eleventh place due to the defeat.
