The Cowboys sign a new offensive lineman. Who is it about?

The Dallas Cowboys continue to bring de rigueur pieces for what will be the 2023 season. This time, they have managed to get some depth on the offensive line with the acquisition of guard and offensive tackle Chuma Edoga. An element that has come to the franchise with a one-year contract and could even fight for the position of guard on the left. A place left by Connor McGovern, who has already gone to the Buffalo Bills.

Now, Edoga comes to the Lone Star team to show what he’s made of. Being part of the 2019 Draft, he would end up being the 92nd overall pick by the Jets. In fact, they would be just two numbers under McGovern when the Cowboys drafted him that same year.

The Jets’ goal when drafting Chuma was to not only work at left or right tackle, but for him to have some versatility at the position and also play guard. From the 2019-2021 seasons, he played in a total of 25 games with the Jets, twelve of which he finished as a starter.

For the 2022 season, the New Yorkers would release him on August 30, to become part of the Atlanta Falcons the next day. During his time in the NFC South team, he came to participate in a game and as a starter against the Chicago Bears for week 11. The result would be a 27-24 victory for the Falcons. In which Edoga would participate in all the snaps offense at left guard (55 overall) but would miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Certainly, the Dallas Cowboys have enough offensive linemen to cover the tackle position. Since we are not only talking about Tyron Smith and Terence Steele. Do not leave out Tyler Smith who will enter his second season as a professional. Along with them, there are also Josh Ball and Matt Waletzko as backup in the OT position.

However, one position that may need more support is guard duty. With Connor’s departure to the Bills, he lost a staple starter from last season, who was already a backup in previous seasons. And Zack Martin acts as a guard on the right side, so the acquisition of Edoga has been a great success. Especially since the only item available for the position is Matt Farniok. However, the latter also performs as a center.

Sure, this year’s Draft may help the Dallas Cowboys select another guard out of all the college prospects. But at least they’ve already made a breakthrough with Chuma, who they already had on their radar for 2022. Much was made of the possibility of a trade for the offensive lineman, but negotiations cooled off. But now that he’s part of the franchise, a player with his experience could fight for the left guard spot. Something that will have to be evaluated both in the organized activities and the training camp.

There’s no question that the Dallas Cowboys have been doing a great job in free agency. Not only looking for quality elements, but taking into consideration the positions in which they really need players. With this clear example, it is clear that they have not left out the offensive line and that much more talent will be sought in the coming weeks. In any case, the signing of Chuma is still an important step. Now we just have to wait to see his performance with Dallas.
