Nagelsmann had to end his active career at the age of 20. But it quickly turned out that the talented footballer is also a talented coach. He made a name for himself as a youth coach for FC Augsburg and 1860 Munich – he played for both clubs himself. Incidentally, Thomas Tuchel also had his fingers in the game.
The career of Oberbayern really picked up speed at TSG Hoffenheim. Youth coach, assistant coach, head coach from February 2016 – and that at the tender age of 28. In 2014 he had led the A-Juniors to the German championship.
Nagelsmann managed to stay up in his debut season, taking over TSG in 17th place. In 14 league games he had seven wins, two draws and five defeats (points average 1.64). In the 2016/17 season he finished fourth (16/14/4, average of 1.82), and in the 2017/18 season even third (15/10/9, average of 1.62). His last season in Hoffenheim (13/12/9, average of 1.50) was less successful, he only managed ninth place. In the cup, he never got past the second round with Hoffenheim, and the Kraichgauers also missed the knockout rounds internationally during this era.
Nagelsmann took over at RB Leipzig from July 2019. The change was good for his point average (18/12/4, average of 1.94), third place in the table was also impressive. In the cup it was only enough for the round of 16, but the Saxons made it into the semi-finals of the Champions League. The following season, Leipzig finished second (19/8/7, average of 1.91), Nagelsmann was eliminated in the premier class in the round of 16 and lost to Borussia Dortmund in the cup final.
The big title came in Munich. In his debut season 2021/22, Nagelsmann became champion (24/5/5, average of 2.26), but the second-round defeat in the cup in Mönchengladbach (0:5) hurt, as did the quarter-final defeat in the Champions League against outsiders villa real.
Nagelsmann’s point average for the current season is 2.08 (15/7/3). Overall, he has an average of 2.19 for the record champions (Hoffenheim 1.65, Leipzig 1.93).
