At the WTA tournament in Miami, Bianca Andreescu is injured and thrown off the field in a wheelchair. The pictures are reminiscent of Alexander Zverev.

Miami – The scenes that unfolded at the WTA tournament in Miami on Monday bring back unpleasant memories in the tennis world. In the round of 16 match between Bianca Andreescu and Ekaterina Alexandrova, Andreescu twisted his left foot badly.

Name: Bianca Andreescu
Date and place of birth: June 16, 2000 (Missisissauga, Canada)
Sport: tennis
Major Achievements: 1x US Open Champion (2019), Newcomer of the Year 2019

Andreescu left in tears

The Canadian is writhing on the ground in pain, and the caregivers rush to help. “I’ve never felt so much pain,” screams the 2019 US Open winner during treatment. A little later, the WTA confirmed an injury.

When the score is 2-0 in the second set, Andreescu has to give up. Her opponent Alexandrova comes to her to the applause of the fans, hugs her and offers consolation. The 22-year-old is then helped into a wheelchair, with tears in her eyes, she is pushed off the seat. Video clips on Twitter show her mother in the stands, shocked and stunned by the events.

Opponent Alexandrova with warm words for Andreescu

“I’m really sorry about what happened. When you saw her lying on the court in so much pain, it hurt just to look. You can’t help, you can’t do anything, it’s terrible. I wish her a speedy recovery,” Alexandrova was quoted as saying on the association’s website after the match.

For Andreescu it is the next injury in a career already plagued by physical ailments. For almost the entire year 2021, she struggled with knee problems and could hardly play. She did not play the Australian Open 2022 either, took a physical and mental break at that time. Even the end of a career was in the room, as she later made public.

Zverev on a six-month break after a similar injury

Alexander Zverev also had to take a break, who suffered a similar fate to Andreescu. At the French Open in June 2022 in the semifinals against Rafael Nadal, he injured his right foot and damaged ligaments. He also had to be taken off the pitch in a wheelchair and gave up the game – it was the first game of his life that he couldn’t finish.

“At first you naturally think your career is over. You heard the sound of breaking, a certain fear is already there,” reveals the German number one in The big Zverev documentary – “Mission Comeback”. He finally celebrated his comeback in mid-December, about six months after the serious injury.

Andreescu can only hope that she too can return to the pitch soon. (masc)
