Wizards and Kristaps Porzingis working on a contract extension

Kristaps Porzingis and the Washington Wizards have been in strong talks about signing a contract extension. According to the journalist from The AthleticInsider Shams Charania plans to decline his $36 million player option for the 2023-24 season and sign a new long-term deal.

The Wizards, who have dealt with various injuries and setbacks over the course of the season, sit 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 34-42 record. They still keep their chances to play the ‘play-in’but two and a half games separate them from the Chicago Bulls, ranked tenth.

The capital franchise can offer Porzingis a maximum of four years and $180 million if he finally rejects his player option and extends his contract. The deadline to reach such an agreement is the end of June. In parallel, Kyle Kuzma is also expected to reject his ‘player option’ and becomes an unrestricted free agent, although there is mutual interest in signing a new contract.

In his first full season with the Wizards, Porzingis is averaging 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 blocks. He has started all 65 games he has played.
