The British tennis player slipped that the presence of Russians and Belarusians in the oldest Grand Slam is practically a fact.

The British Andy Murrayformer number one in the world, announced that Russian and Belarusian tennis players will be able to play again at Wimbledonafter the veto last year, and that it does not seem “crazy” that this was the case.

Athletes born in Russia and Belarus could not play the 2022 edition after the ban on the London Grand Slam, after the invasion in Ukraine. The traditional contest was the only one of the four ‘big’ to carry out this veto and that cost them a million-dollar penalty from the ATP and WTA, in addition to the fact that the tournament did not distribute points.

“It’s something very complicated and I’m sorry for the players who couldn’t be there last year”Murray told the British BBC.

In that sense, he added: “But I also understand what the situation is and why it is so difficult for Wimbledon to make a decision.”.

“From what I understand, this year they are going to let them play and it doesn’t seem crazy to me that they were. If Wimbledon makes another decision, I would understand that too.”admitted the winner of three Grand Slams.

To increase the pressure on Wimbledon, the ATP and the WTA threatened to withdraw the license of the previous tournaments that are held on British soil, such as Queen’s, which would be a very important economic blow for the tennis federation of this country.
