An 85-year-old woman foiled a scam against her in Abano, in her home in the center.
The woman received a phone call from a self-styled member of the police force, informing her that her nephew had been detained for payment of a large fine for an offense committed. The woman was asked for more than 12 thousand euros, but she, aware of what her family members had told her about the ongoing scams, called her son from another mobile phone user. The man told the woman not to follow up on the scam and to call the police. The criminals lost track of them as soon as they realized that the action had not gone well.
The advice of the police forces, which have long been engaged in information meetings on this type of event, is not to indulge in phone calls, warn the police or carabinieri in case of suspicions, call family members on the cell phone (the landline is usually busy with the conversation of scammers) .
Scams have unfortunately become daily in the Castelli Romani, with money and valuables stolen from many unaware elderly people.
