Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 16 (Reporters Wang Jingyu and Li Jia) “Stop! You come here… What is the purpose of two-on-two? How should you run after passing the ball?”

On the morning of March 5, in the basketball hall of the Miyun District Basketball Association in Beijing, the Miyun No. 3 Middle School men’s basketball team was training. They were guided by the former Chinese women’s basketball player Gao Lianhuan.

Wang Limin, the principal of Miyun No. 3 Middle School, was sitting on the sidelines, showing a gratified smile.

“It’s really lucky to have such a professional coach as Gao Guidance to teach them.” She said, “We don’t expect the team to win the championship, but we hope that every child can fully tap their potential and achieve the best of themselves .”

Wang Limin was born in Miyun. When she was young, her family was poor and there was no entertainment. Her father often took her and her younger brother to the only outdoor basketball court in Miyun to watch basketball games. She only remembered that those people were sweating profusely, running and grabbing desperately, and she and her brother also shouted desperately.

Wang Limin majored in Chinese in college, and also took basketball and volleyball refereeing courses, and obtained the national third-level referee certificate. After working, she fell in love with badminton and tennis again… Wang Limin said: “The seed planted by my father when I was a child took root in my heart and gave me love and thinking about sports in my blood.”

In 1990, Wang Limin graduated from university and returned to his alma mater, Miyun No. 2 Middle School to teach. Mr. Zhang Hongbin, who taught at the school at the same time as Wang Limin, built the men’s basketball team of Miyun No. 2 Middle School into a famous campus basketball team in Beijing from scratch. His persistence for decades left a deep impression on Wang Limin.

In 2013, Wang Limin was transferred to Miyun No. 3 Middle School as the principal. When thinking about the school-running characteristics of “one school, one product”, she immediately thought of basketball.

However, the basketball foundation of Miyun No. 3 Middle School at that time was very weak. This junior high school campus with a capacity of 1,490 students only had a playground with a 200-meter track. There was no standard basketball court, and there was no basketball school team that trained all year round. The biggest challenge lies in the concept. As a middle school in the outer suburbs, Miyun No. 3 Middle School is known for its excellent teaching quality. Many teachers and parents think that, apart from studying, everything else is “blindness”. The school team wanted to train on weekends, but some players couldn’t come, and some were picked up by their parents in the middle of training to take extra cultural lessons. Looking at the sparse team, the coach was anxious, and so was Wang Limin. In her opinion, this is not only a question of basketball performance, but also a question of whether the concept of comprehensive education can be implemented.

In the face of resistance, Wang Limin rose to the challenge. Without a suitable training venue, she traveled all over Miyun No. 5 Middle School, No. 6 Middle School, and No. 2 Middle School with basketball gyms in Miyun City, borrowing the venues for training when they were not in use. Without a professional coach, she went to her old colleague Zhang Hongbin for help. In the case of lack of funds, she often drives by herself to do logistics with the team, saving as much as she can. Sometimes their whole family goes into battle, with their lover as the driver and their daughters responsible for buying meals for the team members. In order to help the school team select potential seedlings, she also went to elementary school games and worked as a “scout”. With her persistence, the development of the school team has improved greatly.

Wang Limin knows very well that if basketball is to become a characteristic of the school, it is far from enough to have only a dozen children from the school team participating. She vigorously develops basketball competitions at school. In the first grade of junior high school, she competes in interesting events including dribbling layups, relays, and shooting. More kids are involved.

Class Basketball League in Miyun No.3 Middle School

The class basketball league starts in October every year at the earliest, and is held in the seventh class every day. As the game progressed, it got dark earlier and earlier, and the game could not be finished. The physical education teacher discussed with Wang Limin and wanted to move the game time forward and the cultural class backward, so that the game could be finished at dawn. At the beginning, the teachers of other subjects disagreed, and no one wanted to attend the last class. Wang Limin did work for the teachers, and she and other school leaders took the lead in sticking to the campus until the lights were turned off before leaving school, which won the support of the teachers. Later, Wang Limin changed the start time of the class league to April every year. As the competition progressed, it got darker and later, which solved the problem of time conflicts with other subjects.

On the road of developing campus basketball, Wang Limin has become more and more determined. In 2018, the school created basketball exercises, which incorporated movements such as dribbling, passing, and circling around the crotch to strengthen children’s basic basketball skills. In 2019, the school held the basketball carnival for the first time, inviting organizations outside the school to design basketball games, organize parent-child basketball games, school team and graduate competitions, cheerleading performances, etc. Today, in addition to the school team, Miyun No. 3 Middle School also has four basketball interest groups and more than 100 people participating in training during the after-school service period.

Wang Limin believes that interest is the best teacher, and she opposes only teaching the test subjects of “dribbling around the pole” in order to cope with the basketball high school entrance examination. She once invited several foreign coaches to give basketball lessons to the children on campus. The humorous teaching methods of the foreign teachers were very popular. don’t go”.

Chinese women’s basketball star Song Xiaobo participated in the 2019 basketball carnival. She recalled: “I was very hesitant to be invited to participate in such a suburban school’s basketball activity. When I arrived at the scene, I was instantly dispelled by these sunny teenagers who pursued their dreams. What moved me even more was that the principal listed sports as a The most important way to realize her educational philosophy has infiltrated the spirit of sportsmanship into the hearts of children.”

At the beginning of 2022, by chance, Wang Limin met Gao Lianhuan. Originally, Gao Lianhuan, who had just retired, just went to “take a look”. In the end, she was moved by Principal Wang’s sincerity and became the special coach of the men’s basketball team of Miyun No. 3 Middle School. Since then, every Saturday and Sunday morning, Gao Lianhuan drove from the urban area to Miyun, about 100 kilometers one way, rain or shine.

With the help of Gao Lianhuan, the strength of the team has improved significantly. In a competition in Beijing, Miyun No. 3 Middle School upset Beijing No. 4 Middle School and Beijing No. 2 No. 2 Middle School, which are traditional campus basketball teams, and finished sixth.

Gao Lianhuan said: “I was moved by the personal charm of the principal. She really paid a lot for this team. What also impressed me was the expectant eyes of the children. At the beginning, they always surrounded me after training and asked ‘When are you coming again?’”

For the basketball of Miyun No. 3 Middle School, Wang Limin devoted a lot of time and energy, but she didn’t feel tired, because it was something she liked. In her opinion, being able to meet a high-level coach like Gao Lianhuan is a blessing for perseverance.

“I hope I can be a ‘fire collector’ so that everyone is willing to add more wood to the fire.” She said.

Wang Limin has been working in Miyun No. 3 Middle School for 10 years. What makes her happy is that the school’s teaching quality and children’s advancement have not been affected because of her emphasis on basketball and sports work.

“I don’t just attach importance to sports, but also to labor and reading. We often say that the five educations should be integrated with each other, so as to form a geese effect and make progress faster.” Wang Limin explain.

Wang Limin believes that a big misunderstanding of school education is that all children are measured only by academic performance. In fact, basketball, sports and many other things can stimulate children’s growth motivation.

“It’s not that we don’t pay attention to learning, but we want to stimulate children’s inner motivation and make them more sunny and brilliant. We hope that through concept leadership, thought penetration and a broad platform, children will be more confident from the bottom of their hearts.”

Wang Limin once wrote a little poem, which contains such words: “We believe that after a few years, when you and I pick up the basketball again, tears may fill our eyes. Because you will find that this is not just a part of sports. option, here is the passion of life, sincere love, the glory of our youth, and the great dream of me and the motherland!”
