The VRT itself sent out the news via a press release. Soenens was diagnosed with the disease after a scan in a hospital in New York, where a suspicious tumor was found on his right lung. The lung cancer was detected at an early stage, and quick intervention with surgery increases the chances of a complete cure, according to the doctors.
Soenens hopes to return to work as an American reporter by June. He has been living and working in the United States since early 2017. Before that, he was editor-in-chief of the television news for three years. He has been working for the news service of the public broadcaster since 1991.
