This morning, the second day of the Spring season was held at the Madrid racetrack, with the dispute of the Bannaby Award and the Spanish Jockey Club Award as stellar events. Great public attendance, with spring weather, which, as always, enjoyed a lot of the excitement of horse racing, the show and the gastronomy.
The day
The morning began at 11:30 a.m. with the Premio Akelarre, for three-year-old colts and fillies, who have not won a prize of €15,000, over a distance of 1,400 metres. Five candidates for victory. Mahatma came out very determined taking the lead, setting the pace of the test, followed by Clifford very vigilant and the rest of the participants. When Mahatma entered he tried to get strong by the sticks, but Clifford presenting his attack in the center of the track, went with great authority to the finish post, winning by almost three lengths, leaving a precious fight for second place that finally went to Mahatma who resisted until the last moment, Cassandra’s final attack who had to settle for being third by just one head.
The second race was Jockey Club Award (Former Quinta de la Enjarada), for three-year-old colts and fillies that have not raced. Seven contenders for victory from the 1,600 meter post. Clori came out very fast, setting the pace for her rivals, when she reached the curve her patio mate Alfil was second, and it was expected that a nice duel could be seen between the two, but when leaving the curve, Alfil made a straight , losing all your options. Clori, with an interesting action, made it easy with the victory, keeping Finally Found at bay, by a length, in the final meters, who was the only one who tried to disturb him. Third, far, more than six lengths, came Urban Wells.
In third place was the Caporal Award, limited handicap, for mares four years old and over, who have not won a prize of €12,000, from January 1, 2022. Eight participants, 1,500 meters of route. Magic Warrior won straight away, with a great ride from Jaime Gelabert and in a beautiful finish, beating Rushdy by half a length, who escorted him from the box hit. With the race “over”, the two pupils of Óscar Anaya, Corps des Pages and Stoweman, finished off with great force, being third and fourth respectively, finishing practically together (separated by a nose) and half a length from the second.
The fourth race was Jose Carlos Rodriguez Award, support of the Lototurf, for non-winning three-year-old colts, over a distance of 2,100 meters. Eleven participants. Beautiful race with an exciting finish. Spanish Ruler picked up the pace from the front straight, closely followed by Wamba and the rest of the field where White Wine, very well placed, awaited his moment. Already in the final stretch Spanish Ruler gave a strong pull followed by Wamba, when it seemed that the two were going to form the twin, White Wine emerged, with a powerful change of pace, hunting the driver at the same goal post, winning by a nose. To emphasize Jaime Gelabert’s piece of riding, getting his second win of the morning. Third was finally Wamba at three quarters of a length.
In fifth place was the Premio Bannaby, for horses and mares four years and older. Seven horses under the orders of the Start Judge from the 2,200 meter post. Finely Tuned was escorting the driver Tritón throughout the entire route to finish off hard in the final stretch to achieve an important victory. White Bay confirming his last, also finished off hard to be second by half a length. Third finishing off very late came Australia Cape to a length and a half. Here Jaime Gelabert got the deserved hat-trick from him.
The day closed on Premio Kalawelsh, reference handicap, for mares four years and older, who have not won a prize of €9,000 since January 1, 2022 over a distance of 1,600 metres, seven participants. Adaaylight Dancer, as usual, made a waiting run, entering the last stretch in the final stretch, in which she presented her attack, first by the sticks without finding a hole, having to open up to find a place, once achieved, she had no rival, winning much easier than the differences at the arrival post marked, since Charming Look managed to beat him by just one neck. Third to more than two hides, Walkczak arrived. Fourth victory of the morning for Guillermo Arizcorreta’s pupils.
