Another controversy for the VAR: the exclusion of Ciranni in the semi-finals of the Cup

After the controversy of the weekend, the VAR plays a major role in the semi-final second leg of the Belgian Cup. With the exclusion of Alessandro Ciranni in Mechelen.

Two days after Tajon Buchanan’s unsanctioned nudge in the ‘Battle of Flanders’, VAR is once again at the center of discussion in Belgium. In question? The dismissal of Alessandro Ciranni in the first half of the second leg of the Cup semi-final between Mechelen and Zulte Waregem.

Mr. Van Driessche had initially shown the yellow card after the tackle from the side of Essevée on Rob Schoofs, but the video referees suggested that he go and see the images and he decided to change his decision. Alessandro Ciranni was sent off, Zulte Waregem ended the game with ten.

An exclusion that does not pass in the Flandrian camp. “I no longer understand anything about VAR, it’s inexplicable”, regrets Jelle Vossen at the microphone of VTM. “It’s a scandal”, plague, for his part, Mbaye Leye, who also expressed his dissatisfaction to the referees during the meeting and who received a yellow card.
