  • The tennis icon also spoke about Novak Djokovic.

  • The German still has a lot in common with his former protégé.

In July 2022, tennis superstar Novak Djokovic triumphed for the seventh time on the holy lawn of Wimbledon after beating Nick Kyrgios in four sets. His former coach Boris Becker was in prison at the time. Now the German tennis legend revealed that the Serb’s Wimbledon victory in prison moved him to tears.

«While I was in prison, Novak supported me, he supported my family. I started crying when he won,” said the 55-year-old at a press conference on the sidelines of the Berlinale. The first part of a two-part documentary about Becker was presented in Berlin. Between 2013 and 2016, Becker was the Serb’s coach for three years.

Djokovic «part of Becker’s family»

Now the German has asserted that he still considers Djokovic a member of his family. “I’m very proud that what is probably the best player of all time is part of my story,” announced today’s Eurosport expert. The discussions about the greatest tennis player of all time (GOAT) recently picked up speed again after Djokovic drew level with Rafael Nadal in terms of Grand Slam titles with his 22nd major title at the Australian Open.

Until a few months ago, Becker himself was still in a prison in England because of bankruptcy penalties. According to the court ruling, he had concealed assets worth millions from his insolvency administrators. In mid-December, the six-time Grand Slam champion was released after 231 days behind bars.
