How Bayern reacted to league bankruptcies under Nagelsmann

FC Bayern lost for the seventh time under Julian Nagelsmann in the Bundesliga last Saturday. The Munich always found a suitable answer – with one exception.

Julian Nagelsmann’s reaction after the 2:3 in Mönchengladbach was indignant. That had less to do with the defeat itself than with the red card for Dayot Upamecano. But somehow there is a causal connection. And Nagelsmann hates losing.

A look at the statistics shows that he quickly got his team back on track after setbacks in the league during the year and a half as Bayern coach. Bayern suffered their first competitive defeat under Nagelsmann’s leadership on Matchday 7 of the previous season. The sobering 1-2 home defeat against Frankfurt was followed by a 5-1 win in Leverkusen – initiated by a brace from Robert Lewandowski.

A month and a half after losing to Frankfurt, Bayern lost 2-1 at “Friday Champion” Augsburg. This was followed by seven competitive wins in a row in Kiev (2:1), against Bielefeld (1:0), in Dortmund (3:2), against Barcelona (3:0), against Mainz (2:1), in Stuttgart (5 :0) and against Wolfsburg (4:0).

After the winter break, badly injured FC Bayern lost 2-1 to Gladbach in the snow in Munich. The record champions also found the right answer to this setback and won 4-0 in Cologne thanks to three goals from Lewandowski. Just four weeks later, Bochum’s 4-2 home win over Munich caused a stir. In the league, FCB, who only drew 1-1 in Salzburg during the week, responded 4-1 against bottom side Fürth after trailing 1-0.

When everything was already decided, Bayern slipped up – three times in a row

That would be four defeats, which Nagelsmann’s team always countered with immediately following league wins. In the Nagelsmann era, there were only two games that didn’t fit into this “fixed pattern”: A week after Bayern secured their tenth championship in a row with a 3-1 win over BVB, Bayern Munich lost 3-1 in Mainz – which was followed by only two draws against Stuttgart (2:2) and Wolfsburg (2:2) at the end of the season.

The 2022/23 season has only provided one case study to date. As in the previous season, Bayern lost in Augsburg – this time in mid-September 0-1. Suffering once again was Leverkusen, who had no chance in Munich at 0:4.

Now, after the defeat in Mönchengladbach, an absolute top game awaits, in which the second-best defensive in the league (24) after Bayern (21 goals conceded) makes a guest appearance in Munich. Union Berlin is still unbeaten in eight competitive games in the 2023 calendar year – and kept three clean sheets.
