Champions League: Factually proven! Bundesliga better than the Premier League

Bundesliga better than the Premier League

Rose at 1st half: “Not in Champions League mode”

Two wins, a draw, a defeat – the results of the Bundesliga in the premier class are not only impressive, but also overshadow the Premier League. A comment from SPORT1 editor-in-chief Pit Gottschalk.

When I read my comment on the performance of the German teams in the Champions League last night, I felt bad. I asked myself: am I too negative? I had written, among other things:

“If the round of 16 second legs in the Champions League go badly, the quarter-finals will take place without German participation. The two 1-0 wins by Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are on shaky foundations when one meets a fit Kylian Mbappé and the other meets a stabilized Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Then RB Leipzig scored 1-1 against the former superior team Manchester City, which is not a bad starting position for the second leg. At least a better one than Eintracht Frankfurt has after the 0: 2 against Naples.

The fact from a German point of view is that three goals in four games are not enough to scare Europe. The joy of late autumn, when four Bundesliga teams had qualified for the knockout round in the premier class, fades.

But it is also a fact: in the four round of 16 first legs, Germany achieved two wins and a draw (with one defeat). The Premier League is doing much, much worse with three defeats and a draw.

Bundesliga can confidently look towards the second leg

So here in all clarity and factually proven: The Bundesliga was better than the Premier League! This is good news for anyone who finds the transfer fee and salary madness in England disgusting.

Admittedly, one shouldn’t get too much of a feeling of superiority for March from this one snapshot in February. But, conversely, you shouldn’t look too pessimistic. Two wins, one draw: that’s good!

I admit: My original assessment of the first leg was created under the impression of spontaneous pessimism. When you imagine the worst that can happen, you can only be pleasantly surprised…

Typically German – one could say: the glass is half empty and not half full. Nevertheless, the Bundesliga can look towards the second leg with confidence. The results so far give a legitimate hope of two teams in the quarterfinals.

Round of 16 second legs:

7th March: Chelsea – Borussia Dortmund (first leg 0:1)

8th of March: Bayern Munich – Paris Saint-Germain (1-0 first leg)

the 14th of March: Manchester City – RB Leipzig (first leg 1-1)

March, 15: SSC Napoli – Eintracht Frankfurt (first leg 2-0)
