With 13 points, Šmits helps ‘Žalgiris’ win in Milan

Latvian basketball player Rolands Šmits scored 13 points in the ULEB Euroleague 19th round game on Friday and contributed to the victory of the Lithuanian team Kaunas “Žalgiris”.

“Zalgiris” won away from Milan “AX Armani Exchange Olimpia” with the result 66:61 (19:9, 18:18, 22:13, 7:21).

Schmidt played 23 minutes and 34 seconds, making two of three 2-pointers and three of six long-range shots. He also had four rebounds, one steal, one turnover, three sacks, one forced foul and 11 efficiency points.

Keverius Hayes stood out for “Zalgiris” with 16 points and seven rebounds, but not only Schmidt had 13 points, but also Edgars Ulanov, who also grabbed eight rebounds. Billy Byron scored 11 points for Milan.

On Tuesday, in the match against “Virtus” of Bologna, Šmits scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while the Kaunas basketball players won 87:77.

The Kaunas team, with 11 wins in 19 games, occupies the seventh place in the tournament table, while the Milan club, with six wins, is in the 17th position.

On the other hand, Artūrs Kurucs scored four points, while “Baskonia” from Vitoria recognized the superiority of “Partizan” from Belgrade with a score of 65:83 (17:29, 19:18, 14:20, 15:16).

Kurucs, playing 19 minutes and four seconds, made one of two three-pointers and one of two free throws, but missed the only two-point shot. Also, the Latvian gave six assists, violated the rules twice, provoked one remark and accumulated five efficiency coefficient points.

Vania Marinković, a student of “Partizan”, was the top scorer for the guests with 16 points. Six basketball players scored ten or more points for the winners, but Uroš Trifunović was the most productive with 15 points.

“Baskonia” with the same balance as “Žalgiris” has a position above the Kaunas team, i.e. in sixth place, while “Partizan” occupies the 11th place with nine victories.

Also this season, 18 teams play in the Euroleague, which play a two-round tournament, with the best eight entering the knockout tournament. The Euroleague final four tournament will take place from May 19 to 21 at the home of “Žalgiris” in Kaunas.

In the previous season, Istanbul’s “Anadolu Efes” was crowned champion, which defeated “Real Madrid” 58:57 in the final match in Belgrade, winning the tournament for the second season in a row.
