Tour Down Under: Spaniard Bilbao wins third stage

Spanish professional cyclist Pello Bilbao won the third stage of the Tour Down Under won.

The 32-year-old won the 116.9-kilometer stretch from Norwood to Campbelltown ahead of Simon Yates from England and Jay Vine from Australia.

The trio sat down six kilometers before the end of the stage on the up to 13 percent steep climb on the Corkscrew Road from the field of drivers and kept the lead to the finish. Born in Berlin, Maximilian Schachmann finished the stage in southern Australia in twelfth place.

Total: Vine before Bilbao

Vine is now 15 seconds ahead of Bilbao in the overall standings. Yates is third, 16 seconds back. The best German overall is Schachmann in twelfth place, 1:01 minutes behind.

The fourth stage takes the field of riders around 135 kilometers around the small town of Willunga in the south of Adelaide. The Tour Down Under ends on Sunday on the Mount Lofty east of Adelaide.
