Girona overthrows Barça, Real Madrid crowned champion of Spain

To delay the coronation of Real Madrid, winner of Cádiz (3-0) a little earlier on Saturday, Barça had no other choice but to win on the field of Girona. Missed. The Catalan derby smiled on Girona (4-2), as was the case in the first leg (4-2). As a result, the Merengues won their 36th Spanish championship title.

However, the Blaugranas had ideally attacked the match by quickly opening the score thanks to Andreas Christensen (1-0, 3rd), author of a magnificent sequence, worthy of an attacker, at the entrance to the penalty area after having deserted his sentry post to provide the surplus offensively. A short-lived lead for Barcelona caught up by Girona and its providential scorer Artem Dovbyk (1-1, 5th), who deceived Marc-André Ter Stegen by crossing his head on a cross from Ivan Martin.

The Culés went on the offensive again. Christensen almost scored twice from a corner, but his header was stopped at the last minute by Paulo Gazzaniga on his line (14th). The Argentine goalkeeper was then saved by his crossbar on a header from Ilkay Gündogan (33rd). Gazzaniga was still unable to prevent Robert Lewandowski (2-1, 45+1) from giving Barça the advantage from the penalty spot (obtained by Lamine Yamal).

Portu changed everything

But Xavi’s players lost control in ten minutes flat, in the second half. An error from Sergi Roberto first allowed Dovbyk to serve Cristian Portu, who had just come on, perfectly for the equalizing goal. In the process, the Spanish winger overflowed into his right lane before finding Miguel Gutierrez behind, whose shot was deflected by two Blaugrana defenders, wrong-footing Ter Stegen.

Eight minutes later, Portu, author of a decisive entry, even scored a double with a sumptuous volley, full of spontaneity. This success allows Girona to overtake Barça in second place in La Liga and validate their ticket for the next Champions League.
