Usually a yellow card is issued by a referee to warn a player after committing a violation. However, the player can still continue the game.

Meanwhile, a red card is given to a player who commits a serious violation or receives a second yellow card. As a result, the player must leave the field.

Then, what about a white card? To whom was it given and what does it mean? That was answered in the continued duel of the Portuguese Women’s League between Benfica vs Sporting CP.

The match which took place on Saturday (21/1/2023) ended 5-0 for the victory of SL Benfica Women as the host. However, there were interesting things during the first round.

When the position was still 3-0, the referee Catarina Campos issued a white card. It was the first time a white card had been issued in a football match.

It happened when the medical team wanted to help players who needed help. Chronologically, there was one player on the bench who felt unwell at the end of the first half and needed medical assistance.

Usually only the medical team from the player’s club provides assistance. However, this time the medical team from both clubs headed to the location to provide assistance.

The medical team from the two teams worked together to help the player in question. Then, the referee issued a white card and showed it to both parties.

After investigating, the white card was apparently issued by the referee to appreciate the attitude of fair play shown by the two teams. This is also to invite other football clubs to uphold fair play.
