The other news of the day:

Human rights organizations: “Fifa is deceiving the world”

Leading human rights organizations have told the World Football Association Fifa issued a devastating verdict in the debate about a compensation fund for migrant workers. World football’s governing body is “deceiving the world,” according to a joint statement by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, FairSquare and Equidem.

Fifa is still not fulfilling its “human rights responsibility because it refuses to compensate migrant workers and their families for abuses in the preparation and implementation of the World Cup in Qatar,” it said.

Since May, human rights activists have been calling for a $440 million fund to be set up for migrant workers who were exploited, injured or died preparing for the tournament.

Tirana Hassan, executive director of Human Rights Watch, spoke of “outrageous whitewashing by Fifa” regarding the serious abuses of migrant workers in Qatar.

It is a “global embarrassment” and a “sinister tactic” to evade the human rights responsibility for compensation: “Fifa continues to collect billions of dollars in revenue, but refuses to do the same to the families of those killed or the workers cheated of their wages only pay a cent.” (SID)

Merk practices clear criticism of World Cup referees

Former World Cup referee Markus Merk assesses the performance of the referees in Qatar as “good to satisfactory”, but also expresses clear criticism. “The performance of the Brazilian referee in England against France did not make sense to me – even if I am open to other mentalities and game interpretations. Clear offenses were not punished, such as the foul before France made it 1-0,” said the 60-year-old Kaiserslautern of the German Press Agency (dpa).

The English also grumbled about Wilson Sampaio’s refereeing in France’s 2-1 victory. In the knockout games, the pressure on the referees increased, Merk said: “Some referees lacked experience and acceptance here – overall with shortcomings and unequal, different duel assessments.” (dpa)

The sensation is followed by a sensational game: The last day of the quarter-finals at the World Cup brings another public holiday to Morocco. Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo mourn. Then England and world champions France deliver an equal fight for the last remaining place in the semi-finals. The pictures.

Croatia don’t want to man mark Messi

Croatia will be man-marked by Superstar in the World Cup semi-final against Argentina Lionel Messi waive. This was announced by coach Zlatko Dalic before the match at the Lusail Stadium on Tuesday (20:00 CET).

“But we have to close the ball’s path to him,” said Dalic. Messi doesn’t run much, he waits: “But when he gets the ball, he has full power and energy. We can’t give him much space.”

The quarter-finals against Brazil and top star Neymar (1:1 aet, 4:2 et) serves as a model for the vice world champion. “If we defend like we did against Brazil, then Messi won’t get the spaces he needs,” said Dalic, who identified weaknesses in the Argentines: “They led 2-0 against the Netherlands and let the opponent come back. That shows they are vulnerable.” (SID)

Popp and Oberdorf feel sorry for the Flick team

The national football players Alexandra Popp and Lena Oberdorf feel no glee because of their male colleagues’ early World Cup exit. It was “of course a pity” and “pity prevails,” said Oberdorf in the RTL annual review “people, pictures, emotions” about the German knockout in the preliminary round at the World Cup in Qatar.

According to his own statement, Popp was also “not happy to watch”. For the top scorer, the ongoing debate about the “One Love” captain’s armband was also a reason for the poor performance of national coach Hansi Flick’s men’s team. “It really wasn’t easy for the boys, for reasons and circumstances that prevail there. I don’t think everything around it was ideal for preparing for a tournament like this,” said the 31-year-old.
