Wilmots: “He would be the perfect new national coach”

For the Red Devils there is nothing else to do but to follow the rest of the World Cup from home after the painful elimination in the group stage. Roberto Martinez may even be looking for a new challenge. Meanwhile, there is also plenty of speculation about who should succeed him as national coach.

At the press conference after the World Cup elimination against Croatia, Martinez himself announced on Thursday evening that he would stop as Belgian national coach. The RBFA nevertheless had the intention to continue with the Spaniard for longer, but will now have to look for a suitable successor. Although that search has yet to be started, several names are already being put forward. And Martinez’ predecessor Marc Wilmots also has an idea.

At the Walloon public broadcaster RTBF after all, he tips Vincent Kompany as the suitable candidate. “Kompany would be perfect, but he is not free,” said Wilmots, who puts forward another former player of his. “Thomas Vermaelen is already there. Why do you always have to look for someone older? When I started as national coach, I didn’t have much experience as a trainer either. That doesn’t mean anything, it’s all about personality.”

NO FOREIGNERS

Meanwhile, more and more foreign names are doing the rounds. Louis van Gaal, for example, who does not seem to close the door to an adventure as a Belgian national coach in advance. But according to Wilmots, the KBVB does not have to look across national borders. “Van Gaal has the experience. But why would you look abroad for what you already have?”, says Wimots.
