Tunisia-France: could it be refused? Imbroglio around Griezmann’s goal, the FFF consults Fifa

A confused end to the match, for a decision that hurts the Blues. France, who thought they had equalized by Antoine Griezmann against Tunisia in stoppage time in the second half, finally saw the referee of the match cancel the goal of the Atlético de Madrid player after an appeal from Var, l arbitration-video. A decision that came after a first final whistle from New Zealand referee Matthew Conger, and when he first ordered the Tunisian players to kick off. A point that questions the French Football Federation (FFF).

According to our information, it has asked Fifa to ask for explanations about the decision of the official appointed to arbitrate this defeat (0-1) of France. The texts of the Ifab, the body in charge of the rules of football, specify in fact that the Var cannot solicit the referee in this situation.

Didier Deschamps skeptical

“If the game has resumed after being stopped, the referee cannot carry out a video analysis except in the event of erroneous identity (of a player sanctioned with a yellow or a red) or in the event of an offense punishable exclusion such as violent behavior, spitting, biting, and/or hurtful, rude or abusive words or acts”, explains the protocol of the instance. If we follow this text, the Var should therefore not have intervened, since the kick-off had been made.

“I am awaiting an answer on the regulations, explained the tricolor coach after the meeting. I don’t know them all by heart. The referee whistled the kick off (after Griezmann’s goal) and the end of the game and I’m not sure the game could be resumed. I went to see the referee to discuss. I’m waiting for an answer and I won’t say what he said. I don’t want to question him. Do you have the number of Collina (the boss of referees at Fifa)? »

But the probability of seeing Fifa come back on this score seems tiny. Especially since the draw or the Tunisian victory does not change the identity of the qualifiers for the round of 16, nor that of the first in the group.
