Euro 2024: Romania outclasses Ukraine

The match: 3-0

Cold snap over Ukraine. Sergei Rebrov’s men, who are playing their first major competition since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, missed their entry into the competition at Euro 2024. Romania, effective in both surfaces, won largely for his entry into the running and won his first victory at the Euro since 2000.

The first half hour did not offer a great spectacle, with Ukraine trying to set its pace on the match, without really managing to accelerate. Zbirna gradually lost control of the match, while Romania was more enterprising, particularly in pressing. Until surprising the Ukrainians. a poor recovery from Andreï Lounine, put in difficulty by Matvyenko, ended at the feet of Dennis Man, who served Stanciu full axis. Romanian captain Stanciu opened the scoring with a superb shot from the right without control, into the top corner (29th).

Romania continued to put pressure on their opponent, with a shot from Man slightly deflected by Stepanenko (39th), then a crossbar directly found by Stanciu on the corner that followed (40th). The Ukrainians, despite 70% possession, did not exist offensively, apart from a cross with difficulty diverted by Dragusin above his goal (36th), followed by an off-target shot from Moudryk (37th).

Ukraine started the second half with a lot of offensive will, and quickly got punished with a counter-attack concluded by another big strike from Razvan Marin, for which Lounine is not exempt from all criticism (53rd). Edi Iordanescu’s men didn’t stop there, and tripled the lead through Dragus, four minutes later. On a two-man corner, Man easily entered the area to serve Dragus, who finished from close range.

Stanciu was again dangerous on an off-center free kick slightly wide (69th). The timid Ukrainian awakening at the end of the match, characterized by two saves from Nita (77th, 80th), and a bar from Yaremchuk (90th + 2), changed nothing in the fate of the match.

With this success, Romania obtains its first victory at the Euro since the 2000 edition (3-2 against England).

The player: Dennis Man

For his first match in a major international tournament, the right winger from Parma made many differences on his side, to the point of being involved in all three Romanian goals. Decisive passer for Stanciu after Lounine cleared the ball on him, he led the charge on the counter which resulted in the second goal, signed Marin. He then easily defeated two Ukrainians before offering a goal ball to Dragus, completing his performance with a high quality performance. He will come out on the hour mark, with the taste of a job well done.
