RB Leipzig: Max Eberl – these statements will annoy Gladbach fans Sports

He’s back on the big football stage!

On Friday, Max Eberl (49) was presented at a press conference as the new sporting director of RB Leipzig – 315 days after his health-related resignation as manager of league competitor Gladbach (2008 to 2022) announced at the end of January.

Nine days after his first official day of work in Leipzig (December 1st), Eberl answered the journalists’ questions for the first time.

And THESE statements will have really annoyed the Gladbach fans!

Eberl on the differences between his ex-employer and Leipzig: “Leipzig has other possibilities, can move on a different scale. Although I was allowed to learn in Gladbach, Leipzig is a step above that.”

And on to RB: “A club that has incredible prerequisites. Things I dreamed of in Gladbach. The basics are fantastic. With a few little things and the feeling I want to try to take the club to a new level again.

Eberl also admits that transfers from Gladbach are not ruled out: “There is no agreement. But to be honest: I made good transfers there and will now also make the best possible transfers here. I would also look at Gladbach to see what players there could be interesting for Leipzig. That’s why I won’t say now that I won’t get a player from Gladbach.”

Incidentally, the new bull boss already made a first forward-looking decision just a few days after taking up his post: he extended the contract of crowd favorite Mohamed Simakan (22), which expired in 2025, until 2027!

In addition, Eberl commented on the PK to …

… his first days in Leipzig: “The first few days were very intense, very interesting. It was a big step. I’m taking the first big step in my second career. Extremely exciting first moments, getting to know great people. It is a location that will be my future for the next few years. I’m really looking forward to the task.”

…his difficult phase earlier this year: “A lot has happened. It was an extremely interesting process as a human being. I had the best time of my life. She was very insightful. I was able to reflect for the first time. These almost eleven months were important for me as Max Eberl to recharge my batteries.”

… his goals with RB: “The goal is to reach the Champions League again. We get to play Manchester City in the knockout stages. We’d like to get through there, even though we know that we’re playing against an almost overwhelming opponent. I came here to be successful. I want the greatest possible success. And at some point I not only want to play in the Champions League, I also want to be able to celebrate more.”

… Bayern and the championship: “Bayern Munich is an overwhelming opponent. I’m not here making an announcement: ‘I want to be German champion’.”

… the situation at the DFB: “It is disappointing for all of us what has happened. And that you are eliminated again in the preliminary round. Oli (Oliver Bierhoff; Anm.d.Red.) has done very well for a long time. I think change is good. A change would be important and good. There is a time after, and we must prepare for it. And I see some catching up to do at the DFB.”

… possible departures in winter: “We want to go into the second half of the season with this squad. Which means we’re not adding any players either. I’m not interested in giving away a player.”

… his view of football: “I’m always someone who’s a bit more critical. We have to make sure that we don’t lose the base. Is this total marketing the right way? We should all be subordinate to the game, not the one around it. We should all make sure that football remains tangible and understandable.”

… possible departures of Christopher Nkunku and Konrad Laimer: “As I’ve learned, I can’t say anything about a possible change from Christo. But there is extremely great interest, which is why something is threatening there. I said to Konrad: ‘If you don’t come to Gladbach, then I’ll come to Leipzig.’ I know the likelihood is very, very low, but there may be an emotional approach I’ll ride. He hasn’t decided yet, but if there’s one percent, I’ll fight for it.”

… his living situation: “I found an apartment, but I can’t move into it yet because I still have to renovate it. That’s why I’m still living in the hotel and enjoying the advantages of the hotel.”

… his office in Leipzig: “I have chosen an office and am starting to feel good and let my soul dangle – even in the office”
