LAS TORRES DE COTILLAS / The Region of Murcia achieves two of the five gold medals in the Spanish under-13 badminton championship

The representatives of the Region of Murcia won two of the five medals in dispute in the Spanish sub-13 championship “Champion wanted”. A tournament organized by the Spanish Badminton Federation (FESBA) in the Mireia Belmonte municipal pavilion in Las Torres de Cotillas from December 16 to 18, in collaboration with the Las Torres Badminton club and the local City Council.

The Torreña Alicia Brao hung the gold medal in mixed doubles together with Raúl Hernández, who was also proclaimed champion of the men’s singles. “It is historic. It is the first time that two Murcian athletes have won gold in a Spanish Championship of lower categories. Congratulations to both of them for this great success”, highlights the mayor of Torreño, Francisco Jesús López Manzanera, who attended this competition.

Strong Murcian representation

A total of 260 matches were played and the rest of the medals were distributed as follows: in the women’s individual modality the champion was María García from Ibiza; in men’s doubles, Martín Fenoll and Pablo Sanz from Madrid won gold; and in women’s doubles María García got another gold, along with her partner Inés Poncela.

Of the 125 athletes from 9 to 12 years old present at the tournament, 12 were from Murcia, from the Badminton Las Torres, Badminton Cartagena, Badminton Infante de Murcia and 30740 clubs from San Pedro del Pinatar. “8 of them were from Torrenos, which is a great source of pride and demonstrates the excellent level of badminton in our municipality,” says the Councilor for Health and Sports, Verónica Morcillo de la Torre, who attended the medal ceremony along with the president of the Badminton Federation of the Region of Murcia, Pedro Caparrós, and the representative of FESBA, Mario Carulla.
