CDMX achieves tourism recovery of more than 81% in 2022

The Ministry of Tourism of Mexico City estimates that by the end of 2022 around 11.3 million tourists will have stayed overnight in hotels in the country’s capital during the year; the economic benefit contemplated in the sector will amount to 108 billion pesos.

Nathalie Desplas, Secretary of Tourism of the capital, explained that these figures represent the recovery of visitors by 81.3 percent and recovery of economic benefits by 95.6 percent, compared to what was registered during 2019, when an influx of 13.9 million was registered. of tourists and a spill of 113 billion pesos (prior to the pandemic).

Desplas assured that by 2023 an economic recovery in Mexico City of 100 percent is estimated due to the fact that there is a greater stay of visitors and that tourist and cultural activities have been fully resumed.

“We have done our job, the Government and the private initiative to create more tourism offer. That the tourist decides to stay one more night or one more day, increases the economic benefits”, he highlighted.

The following year the capital contemplates important activities that will help the recovery to be full, among them is the Tianguis Turístico -an event that will give a world projection to the country’s capital-, the celebration of the Major League baseball game, the Grand Prix of Mexico City, among other important events of great cultural interest.

He pointed out that despite the fact that the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) predicted that, after the pandemic, economic recovery will be achieved until 2024 worldwide, in the country it is expected to occur in the course of 2023.

The Secretary of Tourism highlighted that this year the organization of congresses and conventions was promoted; the “Open Air City” Program was promoted; tourist attractions increased with the inauguration of new recreation places; and increased the cultural offer and shows available to visitors that resulted in an increase in their stay and with it, in tourist spending.

He recalled that the events that took place during the last quarter of the year such as the Great Day of the Dead Parade, Cempasúchil Flower Fairs and the celebration of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Mexico City, the NFL game, the The Christmas Eve Flower Festival, the NBA basketball game and the Christmas Verbena in the Zócalo allowed for a large influx of tourists, since during the days in which they took place there was a hotel occupancy of more than 90 percent in the main tourist corridors.
