Boyfriends killed, the memory of Nino’s cousin

In Caldera the tears gave way to anger. No one, in the small fraction of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, can find peace over the tragic death of Nino Calabrò and his girlfriend Francesca Di Dio. The two boys were found dead last December 22 in England, killed with ferocity with a club from baseball. On that tragic day, the 26-year-old who grew up in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto but moved to Milazzo with his family, returned home he would have noticed the now lifeless body of his girlfriend and then be attacked from behind and beaten to death. So far the only suspect in the murder is Andrea Cardinale from Palermo, Nino’s roommate and friend with whom he shared the croupier job for a few months. The young man remains in custody, yesterday he appeared in court before the judge.

While the return to Italy of the body is awaited, expected in the next few days after all the investigations by the investigators have been completed, a fundraiser has started to help the families. Meanwhile, there are those who pray and remember the two young victims. Yesterday the memorial mass for the two young people in the church of San Rocco in Calderà. At the homily, celebrated by Father Alfonso, there was also Sebastiana, Nino’s cousin. “I will carry his smile in my heart – he tells MessinaToday – it was the first thing I noticed when I met Nino. The last time was a few months ago during the summer, an exceptional and very affectionate boy who doted on his family. He would not have never wanted to leave his land, but like many other peers he was forced to find work. Every day he called his parents, carrying Sicily in his heart”.

And it was the parents who raised the alarm, mom Salvina and dad Salvatore. “When Nino stopped answering – says his cousin – we immediately understood that something was wrong, it wasn’t normal behavior. I learned the news while I was at school, busy with my students in the celebrations before the Christmas holidays. I can’t still believing what happened. I didn’t know the person who is currently being investigated, I hope that what happened is clarified as soon as possible”.

Meanwhile, the small community of Calderà has decided to gather in a moment of prayer with a vigil and a torchlight vigil that will start from the church of San Rocco on the afternoon of 29 December. In Montagnareale, Francesca Di Dio’s country of origin, all the events scheduled for Christmas have been cancelled.
