Antwerp director Marc Overmars hospitalized after a mild infarction | Football

Marc Overmars became unwell on Thursday and was admitted to hospital after a mild stroke. His club Antwerp reports this in a short on Friday statement.

Antwerp states that things are now improving with 49-year-old Overmars. “He will have to take it easy for a while,” writes the club, which does not wish to comment further and keeps it at a short statement.

Overmars has been employed by Antwerp since March, where Mark van Bommel is a trainer. The former striker of Arsenal, FC Barcelona and Ajax, among others, is in charge of football policy at the Belgian club. It is still unclear who will replace him this transfer period.

At Antwerp, Overmars started working barely two months after his forced departure from Ajax. He had to leave the reigning national champion in February of this year because he had shown transgressive behavior towards colleagues.

The appointment of Van Bommel as a trainer was one of Overmars’ first acts at the Belgian club. Later he also managed to bring Vincent Janssen, Calvin Stengs and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp to the club.

Antwerp is the current number three of the Belgian league. The team of coach Van Bommel recently played a 3-3 draw against Westerlo when the Jupiler Pro League resumed. Antwerp’s next game is on January 7 at home against KAA Gent.
