Special Olympics Korea (SOK, President Lee Yong-hun) held a selection ceremony to select 109 Korean national athletes to participate in the 2023 Berlin Special Olympics World Summer Games on the 14th at the In-Times Inn in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
The Special Olympics is one of the world’s three major Olympic Games, following the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and is the world’s largest sports festival for people with developmental disabilities. The Special Olympics will be held in Berlin, Germany from June 9 to 26, 2023, with 7,000 athletes from 180 countries participating.
SOK plans to dispatch a 156-member Korean national team, including 109 players and partners, 32 coaches, 12 staff members, and 3 executives, to Berlin. 109 players and partners were finally selected through lottery among the list of players selected according to the selection criteria, and 32 coaches will be selected through interviews after screening by the Performance Improvement Committee.
Among the 26 Special Olympics events, SOK includes swimming, track and field, badminton, basketball 3×3 (male), basketball 5×5 (female), complement, soccer (men’s 7-person combined soccer/women’s 7-person soccer), golf, weightlifting, roller skating, Participated in 12 sports including table tennis and volleyball.
The selection process for the Special Olympics is a bit special. Unlike other international competitions where players are selected in order of performance, in the Special Olympics, groups are organized according to the level of players’ performance through a classification method called division, and the first winner (team) of each group is selected as a candidate and a representative player is drawn by lottery. select Therefore, anyone with a developmental disability who has the minimum level of performance can compete in the Special Olympics as a national representative if he/she meets the selection criteria. This is in accordance with the regulations of the Special Olympics International Headquarters to provide opportunities for more people with developmental disabilities to participate in various international competitions.
SOK Chairman Lee Yong-hoon said, “We put a lot of effort into fair selection so that more people with developmental disabilities can have opportunities to participate in various international games and provide them with an unforgettable experience.” I will do my best to support the athletes so that they can enter and show their best skills.”
