Russia plans to leave UEFA and turn to Asia

“We will discuss this matter at an executive board meeting. The situation is worth discussing, but I’m not sure we will make a decision. UEFA sees us as part of the European family. We We are implementing all the programs, it helps finance the projects. It would be inappropriate to rush us into negotiations without taking into account its opinion. I said that it was important for us to organize official matches. We have had two years of coronavirus, and now we are suspended,” Dyukov recalled.

The World (FIFA) and European (UEFA) Federations announced on February 28 that the Russian national team and all professional clubs representing the country were banned from all international competitions organized under the aegis of FIFA and UEFA. Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine since February 24 is the reason for the suspension.

Due to this suspension, the Russian national team only played three friendly matches against Kyrgyzstan (2-1), Tajikistan (0-0) and Uzbekistan (0-0), which were counted in FIFA ranking.

A precedent exists. Australia left the Oceania zone and joined the Asian Confederation (AFC) in March 2005.

Russia organized the 2018 World Cup won by France.
