Rama and Bretones become strong with Cervera: two of Oviedo’s surprises, exposed

If Oviedo had not had a plague of aúpa injuries, Hugo Rama and Abel Bretones would probably have a secondary role. Circumstances have put them in the arena. The circumstances, of course, also his good work and lately the determination of Álvaro Cervera, the blue coach, determined to make the most of the second unit while the Oviedo infirmary continues to the top. This is the case of Bretones and Rama. The match against Ponferradina (1-1) left several conclusions that are chewed on in the club, with the Asturian and the Galician as the main protagonists. The first made his debut as a starter in the left-back position -he could stay there in the future-, and the second seems to be pushing while Borja Sánchez speeds up his recovery.

Cervera was very satisfied with his performance in that position and it remains to be seen if he continues to bet on him in that position, which according to various voices in the club is going like a glove, or if he goes back to the extreme. “He sees himself in any of the positions, because what he wants is to play. He is full and happy, aware that he has a perfect opportunity to establish himself in professional football,” says his representative, the Asturian Alfredo Martínez, who highlights the “professionalism ” from Bretones, 22 years old and recently renovated.

Those around him say that the feeling of being an important part of Oviedo has not changed for the Langreano. His former Langreo teammates joke that he is Oviedista Gareth Bale. He lives in La Felguera (Langreo) and studies a Mechatronics module. He is in the second course and his idea is to finish it. One of the keys to a good season for Bretones is his physical strength. There is a relevant fact: he is one of the very few players who has not missed a single training session since the preseason began.

A little further on than Bretones, also in El Toralín, was Hugo Rama. The Galician gave his first assist of the course to Bastón from the left wing. The attacking midfielder is highlighted by those who know his involvement in Oviedo as he feels more valued this season than under Cuco’s orders. Rama is one of the players who travels the most kilometers and even trains alone with a personal trainer to be in better condition, something that more players from the blue squad also do.

Cervera has devoted a lot of energy to getting the best out of Rama, the coach aware that he would need him to replace Borja Sánchez. At this start of the League, the Galician has emerged as a specialist in crosses into the area. In fact, according to data from Dirfut, he is the fifth in the ranking in precise shipments to the area. Now that Borja will return from his injury, the dispute on the left flank will be more open than ever.
