Umpire Jim Wolf Removed from Game After Being Hit by Foul Ball in MLB Duel

SEATTLE — Umpire Jim Wolf was removed from the game as a precaution in the fifth inning of the major league baseball duel between the Kansas City Royals and the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday after being hit on his mask by a foul ball.

Wolf was examined by his colleagues and a member of the Mariners medical staff between the first and second half of the fifth inning.

Wolf was hit by the foul ball in the first half of the inning.

After discussions, umpire Ryan Blakney, who was working first base, headed to the locker room to put on the protective gear worn by the home plate official, and Wolf left the field.

The match resumed after a delay of about 10 minutes, with only three referees.

Wolf has been a full-time major league official since 2004.
