Padel Worlds: Belgium finishes 4th for women and 6th for men

An-Sophe Mestach and Helena Wyckaert gave Belgium the first point by beating Chiara Pappacena and Giulia Sussarello 6-4, 6-7 (8/10), 6-4.

Elyne Boeykens and Dorien Cuypers then fought 6-2, 6-1 against Emily Stellato and former tennis world No.7 Roberta Vinci, which allowed Italy to equalize at 1-1. Giorgia Marchetti and Carolina Orsi then outscored Laura Bernard and Elizabeth Wyckaert 6-2, 6-1 as Italy clinched bronze for the second year in a row.

Belgium found themselves in the small final after being eliminated 2-0 by defending champion Spain on Friday in the semi-finals.

This 4th place is Belgium’s best result at the Padel Worlds, organized since 1992.

Last year, Belgium took 6th place in the women’s category and 9th place in the men’s category.

This week, the Belgian men’s team, eliminated by France in the quarter-finals, finished in 6th place after being beaten 2-0 by Brazil in the match for places 5 and 6 on Saturday.

Laurent Montoisy and Maxime Deloyer lost 6-4, 6-4 to Lucas Bergamini and Stefano Flores and Clément Geens and Jérôme Peeters were beaten 6-2, 6-4 by Lucas Campagnolo and Joao Pedro Flores.

As usual, the finals will pit Spain against Argentina for both men and women. These two nations have shared all the world titles since 1992 and practically all the finals, only Brazil having managed to play one in 2006 for men and one for women in 2012.

Among men, Argentina has ten titles, against four for Spain, defending champion. Among the women, Argentina also holds the record with eight victories, against seven for Spain, which has won the last four editions.
