More and more European Championship participants are announcing their provisional squads. On Thursday, bond coach Ronald Koeman also let the cat out of the bag. A hotly traded name is missing from the list.

Six Oranje players should feel at home at the upcoming European Championships, as they already play in the Bundesliga. The Dortmund duo Ian Maatsen and Donyell Malen were appointed, as were the newly crowned Leverkusen champions Jeremie Frimpong or Matthijs de Ligt (Bayern Munich), Xavi (RB Leipzig) and Wout Weghorst (TSG Hoffenheim).
Other well-known names in the Dutch squad include Nathan Aké (Manchester City), Memphis Depay (Atletico Madrid), Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo (both FC Liverpool), Frenkie de Jong (FC Barcelona) and Stefan de Vrij (Inter Milan ).

In total, Koeman’s pre-selection includes 30 names – and there are certainly surprises there. Steven Bergwijn and Ryan Gravenberch can still have their hopes up. Both had recently played no role for Oranje.
While Bergwijn’s situation was related to his shaky form, the reason for Gravenberch was completely different. He had refused to play for the U21s and was then criticized by Koeman – the former Bayern player has not been nominated since March 2023. Now the U-turn for now. It is still questionable whether participation in the European Championship will actually take place, but at least he plays a role in the national coach’s considerations.
Joshua Zirkzee is again missing from the squad. The 22-year-old made a name for himself in Serie A after moving from FC Bayern to FC Bologna and is now said to be on the list of numerous top clubs. Still, it wasn’t enough for Koeman.
Koeman still has to cut four players; the 61-year-old wants to announce his final squad on May 29th. It can be assumed that he will take 26 players with him, as he was a big advocate of the 26-man solution.
