From snipers to heavy artillery, Wolves change their mode of attack

Currently without Rudy Gobert, sick and away from the team, the Wolves are especially in the soft underbelly of the Western Conference with a balance sheet just in balance, with five wins for as many defeats.

Victorious over the Rockets to end a series of three consecutive losses, Minnesota has clearly not yet found its playing identity this season, after a summer that upset the workforce and the balance of this young group.

In this case, last season, Wolves were the team that attempted the most 3-point shots, with more than 41 attempts on average per game, for 36% success (in 12th place). This year, on the other hand, Minnesota only tries 35 shots from afar on average (in 11th place in the League) for a sad 32% success rate, among the NBA donkeys with the third worst percentage.

“I don’t think we’ll be one of the teams with the highest volume of 3-pointers like we have been in the past, at least certainly not in the coming weeks.”confirmed recently Chris Finch.

“We don’t care about percentages! The shots will end up falling in it”

With the departure of Malik Beasley for Utah, the Wolves have certainly lost one of their regular snipers during the offseason. But Minny’s shooters have not yet settled their sights, like an Anthony Edwards, to say the least, borrowed offensively (he has only just scored his first dunk against Houston) at 36%, a Karl -Anthony Towns at 35% or even worse from a D’Angelo Russell at 27%…

“We’re not shooting as well as we’d like, but if we keep trusting each other, keep passing and stay in the rhythm of our attack, I think things will fall into place for everyone”positive Karl-Anthony Towns dans The Athletic.

Still in full adjustment, the Wolves finally have only two players with decent percentages behind the arc: Taurean Prince at 46% and Kyle Anderson at 50%. But the latter tries very little…

“We don’t care about percentages! The shots will end up falling in it, ” pounding Kyle Anderson. “We don’t care about being in the twentieth of the League in 3-point percentage. The shots will eventually come in. »

“All of this is still brand new to us”

With their XXXL racquet, the Wolves have changed their tune quite radically compared to last season’s “run & gun”. It is therefore logical and predictable that it gets a little stuck as the transition from one style of play to another operates. In the meantime, it’s a little too much.

“We think too much” continues D’Angelo Russell. “All of us, and me first. It’s part of the process. All the guys are in situations they’ve never been in before. »

Pending the return of the tricolor pivot, which should not take long, the Wolves still have two home games, against New York then against Phoenix, to capitalize on the recent progress of their game before flying to a “road trip” of four consecutive games which promises to be perilous.

“We must learn to play with and around [Gobert] », concludes D’Angelo Russell. “When he’s not on the pitch, we’re a different team and we also have to learn to play without him. There are a lot of variables that come into play, including the dynamics of our interiors depending on whether they are playing or not, or how they share playing time. This is all still brand new to us. »
