Football: Freiburg makes itself the first Bayern hunter

Italy’s Grifo scored twice from penalties (4′, 20′) and once from a counterattack (6′). According to the data service provider Opta, it was the earliest hat trick in the German Bundesliga in 31 years. Gregoritsch fixed the break with a lob (45 + 1).

Sven Michel (85′) scored the consolation goal from the penalty spot for the disappointing Berliners, who were decimated from the 19th minute (red card for Diogo Leite). Gregoritsch was in action until the 69th minute, Philipp Lienhart played through for the winners as well as his ÖFB teammate Christopher Trimmel for the guests, who caused the 3-0 penalty with a handball.

After the World Cup break, Freiburg are the first Bayern pursuers to go into the rest of the season – four points behind the leaders. With only one point from the English week, the Berliners slipped back from the top of the table to fifth place.

Mainz and Frankfurt share points in the derby

Eintracht Frankfurt, however, could not quite ennoble a great year. The team of Upper Austrian coach Oliver Glasner only managed to draw 1-1 (0-1) in the Rhein-Main derby at FSV Mainz 05. The Europa League winner can still go into the World Cup break contentedly, as the Hessians spend the winter fourth in the table and as a round of 16 in the Champions League and the DFB Cup.

For Mainz, however, with Karim Onisiwo up to the 85th minute, the last competitive game this year ended on a happy note after three Bundesliga defeats in a row. Jonathan Burkardt (40′) gave the hosts the lead, but Ranal Kolo Muani (67′) scored the equaliser.
