Failed to Qatar, Angry in Manchester

Ivan Toney was definitely disappointed not to appear in the 2022 World Cup. That disappointment was paid off when Toney overthrew Manchester City.

Toney became a starter when Brentford visited the Etihad Stadium, Saturday (12/11/2022) night WIB. Toney, who opened Brentford’s lead in the 16th minute, maximized Ben Mee’s header.

City equalized the score at the end of the first half through Phil Foden. After that Brentford was heavily pressed throughout the second half by City and several times endangered David Raya’s goal.

Brentford then struck in second-half injury time, precisely in the 98th minute when Toney scored his second goal completing a counter-attack built from the right by Joshua Silva.

The visitors won 2-1 and gave City their first loss at home this season. The victory was even sweeter for Toney, who had just been injured because he was not included in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup.

Toney, who has been in sharp form so far this year with 21 goals, only losing to Harry Kane, failed to lure coach Gareth Southgate who preferred Callum Wilson and Marcus Rashford.

This season, Ivan Toney with 10 goals is in the third position of the Premier League’s top scorer list behind Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

“Life has to go on, you must be very disappointed but that’s why we love football… there is still tomorrow, the sun is still up and we move on,” said Brentford manager Thomas Frank as quoted by BBC Sport.

“Ivan just needs to keep doing well like this and someone could have been injured didn’t he today? Maybe it was his chance to go to the World Cup? 10 goals, that’s incredible.”
