England must ‘assume’ their status as ‘favorites’ against Senegal, says Southgate

Gareth Southgate, England manager, qualified for the round of 16 of the World Cup after beating Wales 3-0 on Tuesday:

«We had control of the game in the first half but we didn’t create enough chances. We lacked a bit of balance between midfield and attack. If we ask (Rashford and Foden) where they want to play, that would be where they started the game, but we thought (at the break) that by reversing they could outflank or cut in and they did that very well in the second half. It’s the players who make this kind of decision work.

We need a strong and quality workforce, it was important that Kyle (Walker) played a few minutes, Kalvin (Phillips) too, because you never know when you will need this depth of bench. Different opponents require different compositions.

I saw Senegal play against Iran (in a friendly) in Vienna. I observed them well. From now on we will study their matches. We know some players who play in major leagues and in England. We know we will be favourites, we have to accept it, but we play a very dangerous team».
