DR badminton achieves historic Central American and Pan American qualification 2023

The Parabadminton and Dominican Badminton teams achieved the historical qualification to the Central American and Pan American tournaments next year, by advancing in Peru and Colombia, respectively, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Sports.

Those of conventional badminton, Nairoby Jiménez, Juleixi Acosta and Jonathan Linarez, along with coach Rafael Santin, managed to accumulate 2,500 points out of the 4,000 possible thanks to advancing to two third rounds and another additional second phase at the Challenger in Lima, Peru.

Jiménez, the main Dominican in the Badminton world ranking (#164 BWF), advanced in the first round, but fell in the 2nd round against the Polish Wiktoria DABCZYNSKA (#223 BWF) 21-13, 21-8; Jonatan Linarez also did the same in the first round against the Spanish Alberto Perals, but collided with the Brazilian David Silva, succumbing 21-8, 21-9.

Already in mixed doubles, Jiménez (Nairoby) and Linarez (Jonatan) defeated the Poles, Wiktor TRECKI and Magdalena SWIERCZYNSKA, in the round of 32.

Then, in the round of the best 16 couples, Jiménez and Linarez (DOM) lost to the Peruvians Jose Guevara and Ines Castillo, 21-15, 21-15.

Acosta (Juleixi) on his side, had the bad luck in the draw to lose in the first round with the champion of the tournament, the Japanese Kaoru SUGIYAMA.

However, in the women’s doubles, together with Jiménez (Nairoby) they advanced in the round of 64 and then succumbed to the American sisters Annie and Kerru Xu (tournament finalists) 21-12, 21-14.

After the performance and achievement of the qualifying objective of the Dominican team, Generoso Castillo, general secretary of the Dominican Badminton Federation, thanked the support of the Ministry of Sports for the achievement of this goal.

“The Ministry of Sports fully complied with the Dominican Badminton. Thanks to the allocation of resources we were able to send the Superior National Team to this Challenger in Peru and the national Badminton team for people with disabilities (PARABADMINTON) to the Pan American Parabadminton Championship, in Cali Colombia”, added Castillo.

The Parabadminton delegation arrived yesterday in Cali, Colombia in a combined effort with the Dominican Paralympic Committee and the team is made up of athletes Enmanuel Javier, Odalis Gómez, Víctor Ramirez, Emeli Dicoudray and Escarlin Berroa. Dominican Badminton will continue at full steam with the celebration of its National tournament by categories starting next Friday the 25th at the Tony Barreiro Pavilion of the UASD.
