Xi Jinping’s re-election comes a day after the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China concluded. The event evaluated the social and economic development of the country in the last five years and established the objectives for the next five years. It also served to elect the members of the party’s Central Committee and the Central Commission for Disciplinary Inspection, the body responsible for fighting corruption in the party’s ranks.

On the last day of the congress, amendments to the PCC Constitution were also approved. The changes affirmed Xi’s “key position” on the party’s Central Committee, adding that all members must “gain a deep understanding” of his role.

The amendments refer to the ideology that governs the country’s political system, which is “the Marxism of contemporary China and the 21st century,” which “embodies the best Chinese culture and the spirit of this age.”
