Xabi Alonso replaces fired Gerardo Seoane as Bayer Leverkusen coach | Bundesliga

Seoane had been working as a coach at Leverkusen since last year. The Swiss had come over from Young Boys Bern, with which he had become champion of Switzerland three times in a row.

Last season he led Leverkusen to third place in Germany, but this season Seoane couldn’t get the engine going.

The German top club had a dramatic start to the season in the Bundesliga with 5 out of 24 and is also muddling in the Champions League – in the Club Brugge group – with 3 points from as many matches. It lost 1-0 to Jan Breydel.

On Wednesday, Leverkusen communicated that it is knocking Seoane to the door. With Xabi Alonso, it immediately presented a successor. The Spanish legend has won the Champions League, the World Cup and the European Championship twice as a player for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and the Spanish national team.

As a coach, he learned the tricks of the trade with a Real Madrid youth team and the last two seasons with the second team of Real Sociedad. Leverkusen will be his first real job as head coach of a first team.
