Schwalbe and penalty dispute: double trouble for Borussia Sports

Swallow and Elfer dispute |

Double trouble for Borussia

Borussia fought for a lucky point in the 2:2 in Wolfsburg. Two scenes in the final phase got heated.

Coach Daniel Farke (45) quarreled with referee Benjamin Cortus (40) shortly before the end!

Reason: A duel in the 82nd minute between Marcus Thuram (25) and Maximilian Arnold (28). After a repelled Bensebaini free kick, both ran to the ball. The Wolfsburg captain brought down Thuram in the penalty area. Cortus let the game continue – much to the annoyance of the Borussia coach.

Farke after the final whistle on the Sky microphone: “I don’t understand why the VAR didn’t intervene. I don’t stand up and demand anything. But objectively speaking, we could have gotten a penalty.”

The Frenchman was a bit faster on the ball, put his foot in and shielded the ball. Arnold first hit him on the shin, only then poked the ball away.

The situation was clear for ex-referee Manuel Gräfe (49). Gräfe on Twitter: “The goal below was clear. Arnold didn’t hit the ball either, but only grazed it after the goal. Lucky for Wolfsburg!”

Thuram swallow as a trigger

Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac (51) was particularly upset about the previously whistled free kick. Kovac: “That was a clear wrong decision.”

Marcus Thuram was again in the center of the action: dribbling, he put the ball past Paulo Otavio, stepped on the Brazilian’s foot and sank to the ground – a swallow! Referee Cortus fell for it.

Was that the reason why he didn’t decide on a penalty in the duel between Thuram and Arnold?

Ex-referee Manuel Gräfe (49) on Twitter: “It may have influenced the referee to deal more critically with Thuram’s fall patterns.” Gräfe continues: “Sometimes there is feedback from the VAR on scenes.”

Sounds like a fact…
