Referee Massimiliano Irrati is said to have admitted that he accidentally stepped on Karsdorp’s toes and that the Dutch defender reacted sorely. Initially it seemed as if Karsdorp got red and therefore reacted furiously. But later it turned out that an assistant coach of Roma had been sent away and that the former Feyenoord player had literally stepped on his toes. Irrati has apologized for the course of events.

The Italian reported personally in the dressing room of the Romans afterwards to say sorry to Karsdorp, Italian media reported. Irrati has therefore not placed a note on the official match form.

The defender gave Irrati a shove, then pointed to his chilled knee. Members of the technical staff tried to keep Karsdorp away from the arbiter to prevent worse. Last Monday, Karsdorp made his comeback at AS Roma, after being operated on his meniscus in mid-September.
