Werder Bremen is looking forward to the season finale against VfL Bochum. On Thursday, head coach Ole Werner also spoke about the rise of former club Holstein Kiel – and a very special video from summer newcomer Karim Coulibaly.

The press conference at Werder Bremen on Thursday was packed with topics. At the end of the almost 25-minute media session, which also included Bremen player farewells and the absence of Marvin Ducksch from the German European Championship squad, the topic of discussion came to Karim Coulibaly.
The 16-year-old will be moving from Hamburger SV’s youth team to Weser next summer. Head coach Ole Werner has already given the “talented” defender hope “that he can get a taste of professional training despite his young age.”
In any case, Coulibaly made his move like an international star Instagram staged. Together with his advisor, the defensive talent traveled to Bremen by helicopter – with a view of the Weser Stadium. “It’s certainly not normal,” said Werner when asked about the video, which he didn’t miss either: “You don’t see it that often, I have to say.”
I don’t know if you can blame a 16-year-old boy so much.

If Coulibaly runs into him in the summer, it certainly won’t be “a big issue again” because, according to Werner, there is already “an exchange on the whole topic” between the club and the advisor.
“I don’t know if you can blame a boy who is 16 so incredibly big,” said Werner, who added meaningfully: “You don’t make every decision yourself, so I think it’s more a question of All around, as one of the boy himself.”
Werner described the unnecessarily opened barrel as “a great shame for the boy because he is fundamentally a good boy.” He still wants to approach him “with an open mind” and let him prove himself.
“It actually only happens to me when we win games ourselves”
Meanwhile, one league lower, Holstein Kiel has proven itself and secured promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time. Werner made a significant contribution to this development between 2019 and 2021. That’s another reason why he’s “really looking forward to the club” – and to experiencing the “first league atmosphere in the Holstein Stadium.”
He met Amos Pieper on the Monday without training and gave him an insight into his emotional world. “I told him that I’m having a hard time sleeping at the moment. That actually only happens to me when we win games ourselves,” explained Werner with a smile: “Sometimes it’s out of euphoria, then you sleep badly and I actually have it after Kiel’s promotion too.”
The first promotion to the upper house is definitely deserved. “There are a lot of very, very good people at work and it wasn’t long ago that the club was in the 4th league, that the club was more or less the laughing stock of the city and was very much in the shadow of the handball players,” remembers Werner. His anticipation for the direct duels next season is already palpable.
