South Korea outperforms Japan

On the one hand, there’s Rebecca Campbell, the presiding manager of international content. She thinks any Korean Disney production would be great content, both regionally and globally. If a production was well received in Korea, it would mean that it would receive a positive response across Asia and also around the world.

Carol Choi, the chief content manager specifically for the Asian region, then made a comparison with Japan. According to her, Korean content would be superior to that of Japan, particularly in terms of international reach, as viewers outside of their country of origin would also sympathize with and love them.

Of course, some Korean Internet users immediately took this as an opportunity to take on their eternal rival from the neighboring country rant:

  • »I always try to enjoy Japan’s unique sensibilities, but it’s true that Japanese works simply lack something globally.«
  • “I haven’t watched a Japanese work since ‘Love Letter’ (1995).”
  • »Japanese works are unrealistic and uncomfortable.«
  • “Japan is an isolated island and probably too unique to please internationally.”
  • »The only thing South Korea loses to Japan these days is in terms of population.«
  • “South Korea has also surpassed Japan in many other areas, such as baseball, soccer, figure skating, the Olympics, chipset technology, consumer electronics and smartphones, not to mention K-pop.”
  • »Webtoons have already turned Korea into a comic heavyweight.«
  • “It’s still too early to tell. In fact, South Korea’s competitiveness is increasing while Japan’s is decreasing.«
