Amazon Prime Video to Enter World of Streaming Sports with NBA Deal: A Game-Changing Move

Amazon Prime Video is preparing to forcefully enter the world of streaming of sporting events: after having got its hands on some UEFA Champions League matches a few years ago, now Jeff Bezos’ giant is about to reach an agreement with the NBAas reported by The Athletic.

If the partnership really were to be made official, it would be a revolution for the world of sports TV rights. The agreement in question would be for a “significant” number of games, both regular season and playoffs, and would even last 10 years starting from the 2025-26 season.

Amazon’s arrival will not exclude more traditional broadcasters such as ESPN, which is expected to renew its contract while maintaining the NBA Finals as an exclusive. Next season will be the last before the expiration of another ten-year agreement, signed in 2014 with ESPN and TNT, for an average annual figure that brings 2.6 billion dollars a year into the League’s pockets.

To include a third partner, Amazon, ESPN and TNT will see their number of games slightly reduced: ESPN is expected to go from 100 to 80. According to The Athletic, Thursday’s games could be those available on Prime Video.

Amazon would also be interested in purchasing global rights to the NBA, this means that even in Italy we could eventually see the matches on the platform. To date, here, live broadcasts are entrusted exclusively to Sky Sport, while the NBA League Pass is obviously available globally, which would not undergo any changes.
