Dejan Bodiroga, President of the Euroleague: “The current calendar does not allow the development of basketball in the right direction”

New president of the Euroleague, Dejan Bodiroga believes that the current calendar of European competitions does not allow the development of basketball as a whole.

The public outings of the new president of the Euroleague Dejan Bodiroga are rare at the start of the season. Invited to speak on Serbian television, he explained that a change in the format of European competitions was necessary.

“My position is to protect the interests of the clubs, that is to say the Euroleague. I think there should be a conversation about harmonizing the calendar. There are currently four continental competitions, which is a lot for Europe. Seems quite confusing for a basketball fan”he specified.

According to him, the international windows instituted by FIBA five years ago need to be reviewed in their operation.

“The November and February international windows call into question the quality of the game as NBA and Euroleague players are unavailable for their national selections. The modern Euroleague was founded over 20 years ago. Five years ago, FIBA introduced the window system. Such an approach has not yielded results so far because the goal of having all the best players together has not been achieved. The basketball system should go hand in hand with football, where the best players compete in their national teams. This is not the case in basketball. The current European competition calendar does not allow basketball to be developed in the right way. There is a problem somewhere. »
