Silberberger Era Ends at WSG Tirol: What’s Next for the Coach?

The Silberberger era with the Tyroleans ends on Saturday with a guest appearance in Wolfsberg (5 p.m.). “I’m looking forward to this match and I’m also looking forward to what comes after,” said the coach. What that could be is currently uncertain. “I’m open to anything, it has to be an interesting project. I certainly won’t put myself on the outline somewhere if there’s no idea behind it or if I don’t feel it.” He doesn’t want to be used as a stopgap (“Now just take it from Silberberger because you can’t find anyone else”).

He’ll let everything happen to him now. “I definitely think the next three or four weeks will be crucial for me,” Silberberger was convinced. At the moment he is looking forward to the end and then a three-week vacation.

“I can’t afford time off”

A break – as outgoing Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp plans to do – is out of the question for the Tyrolean. “I don’t think I can afford a sabbatical. This is only possible if you were previously a coach at Liverpool or Bayern, where they give you millions back and forth. That hasn’t been the case for eleven years. If I could do it, I would.”

GEPA/Michael Kristen After eleven years, Silberberger is leaving the WSG Tirol and his coaching career will continue seamlessly

After 378 games as WSG coach, Silberberger is happy that the club is in a solid sporting position. “It took a lot of energy when you were on a project for eleven years. For us the last five years have only been about livelihoods, so that was a challenge.” He thinks the Watteners are ready for the Bundesliga for the coming season. “Stefan (sports manager Köck) now has a lot of work to do. The new coach will certainly bring great impetus.” In the future, he will be “the club’s biggest fan,” said Silberberger.

Oswald ends his career

Long-time captain Ferdinand Oswald is also saying goodbye; he will end his active career in the summer due to his back injury and move to the support staff. The 33-year-old Bavarian, who has had Austrian citizenship for three years, will take over the position of goalkeeper coach following Hermann Steinlechner’s upcoming retirement.

After two herniated discs, Oswald was unable to play a single game for the WSG this season. “Exercise in everyday life, that’s no problem. But I can no longer imagine going out there and having balls hit my face from two meters. “It’s no longer possible,” explained the keeper. He has played for Wattener since 2014, including 112 times in the Bundesliga.
