Amy Pieters has again made progress in her recovery in recent months. The cyclist can take a few steps herself and is sometimes able to walk short distances with support. Pieters suffered a brain injury in a fall in December.
By our sports editorsPieters has been staying at the Daan Theeuwes Centrum, a specialist rehabilitation center in Woerden, since August. Things are slowly moving in the right direction, although there are still concerns.
“With a little help, she gets up from her chair and takes her own steps. Supported she can walk short pieces. Because of what she shows, there is the conviction that Amy will be able to walk again,” the Pieters family reported on Tuesday. an update.
“Amy sets the pace. There are days when she doesn’t want to show this again. Then there comes another day when she wants to stand, starts walking and immediately makes a serious effort.”
Pieters suffered her brain injury in December last year during a road training in Spain. After undergoing surgery on her skull there, she started working on her recovery in the Netherlands.
‘Not being able to express it is sometimes hard’
The update also states that Pieters is increasingly making sounds and sometimes even pronounces a word. However, the lack of clear communication is sometimes difficult. “Lately, it has become a bit more difficult to motivate Amy with physical exertion. Talking is not yet possible, which makes it difficult to explain why not,” reports her family.
“Not being able to explain or express it is sometimes difficult for her and for us. Fortunately, she can be motivated by playing a game. We take it for granted that she chooses her own moments.”
It is also said that Pieters recently had a seizure (an epileptic seizure). Contrary to last time, this does not seem to have led to a major setback. This is probably due to good and quick action.
Pieters and Kirsten Wild won a total of three golds in the torque section at the Track Cycling World Championships. In 2019 she won both the road race and the mixed team pursuit at the European Championships.
