When asked whether Frankfurt had done what Gladbach would like to achieve with two titles in recent years, Virkus replied enthusiastically: “Frankfurt invested 30 million euros in the squad, which was not possible for us. They planned the squad very cleverly and did things that we couldn’t do. You have to respect that. But I think we did a good job as far as we could.”

Once in a rage, the sports director really got going: “We are in the middle of a process. What bothers me a little is when I read that we only played 2-2 in Wolfsburg. We have set out to bring the club back into calm waters. We started to reunite fans, club and team. We lined up to smooth out the derby nicks. We’ve already scored a few points. But we are still in the middle of a process that will take time. But if you compare us to clubs that can invest 30 or 40 million or, like the top 4, have a market value that is twice as high as ours, then you create claims here that are completely far removed from reality. That upsets me.”

Closing words Virkus: “The table is very tight. We’re sixth, if you lose now you might be tenth. Now we’re being compared again to clubs that play internationally. You’re comparing apples to oranges. We are on a path that we wanted to go in exactly the same way. That’s why I can’t understand some things.”

When Virkus finished, Farke started talking – his longest monologue lasted 16 minutes and 29 seconds…

His point of criticism: Compared to England, many things in Germany were viewed too critically too quickly!

Farke: “We’ve only played one bad half so far – in Bremen. We’re having an incredibly stable season and we’re currently facing clubs like Dortmund, Leipzig and Leverkusen, who have completely different budgets than we do, so I don’t understand why we’re so critically evaluated by so many. If we had done what we did here at Borussia in England, they would have taken care of us there.”

But Farke admitted in no uncertain terms that defeats really bother him: “After a dirty game like that in Bremen, excuse my choice of words, or if we’re eliminated from the cup in Darmstadt, there’s no one in a worse mood then I. I could kill The day after is even worse. I could kill, it really is. We are totally disappointed and dissatisfied.”
